The 1996 Suncorp North Queensland Games took place over 5-8 April – the first shaky edition of the event.
Despite turning a profit on the previous iteration, untrue rumours that The NQ Games was broke proliferated through local media and publications and caused a cast of headaches – the least of which was limited local publicity.
Yet despite this, survey estimates suggested that of the 7,200 people who competed in the Games, 60% of competitors were visitors to the Cairns region. There were 54 different sports in the Games.
Following the closure of the Games, it was proposed that the NQ Games Foundation review it’s name and associated governance structure; the NQ Sportstar Awards had been inaugurated in 1991 and it was suggested that the organisation could now field events promote sport successfully between The Games.
The change to The North Queensland Sports Foundation was proposed in late 1996 – though it would not formally take effect until after the 1998 Mackay Games
After running three Games over six years with the Foundation, Jim Nichols decided to resign. He took up a position with Mount Isa Rodeo, before later being appointed General Manager of the North West Star newspaper.
